Inspiration/Research
For my 15 original planning sketches, I drew my inspiration mainly from the colors of the main logos that represent Milwaukee Public Schools, International Baccalaureate, and Ronald Reagan High School. I decided that based on the logos and the colors I would use a color scheme that included a navy blue, dandelion yellow, and white in my designs, to make it easier to compare the overall design versus focusing on just the colors.
Another thing I drew inspiration from was the Olympic flag, designed by Pierre De Coubertin, in which there are five equally-dimensioned rings who are infinite and interconnected. This rings represent the original five continents that took part in the Olympic events, each one a color representing the most common color of the country flags in each of those continents. I liked this for a design idea because of the global-minded aspect of it, and how it shows the infinite unity of the parts of the world that it represents.

Other aspects of my research includes the IB learner traits and the number of MPS who, like Reagan, are part of the IB-related programs. I found that 8 schools in MPS are part of an IB program of sorts, and chose to represent that in two of my pieces wit stars, because they are schools going above and beyond the stereotypes that are often assumed of MPS schools. I wanted to use the idea of the seven IB learner traits, but eventually decided against it because of it being an odd number, making it harder to work with than an even number for a symmetrical design. I also played with the idea of having a globe-like symbol on the flag, both literal and an assumed, but did not care much for the designs I made with it.

Experimentation
Not only did I experiment above in my planning phase while I was playing around with certain ideas an shapes, I also experimented with color. I only decided to experiment with color once I had decided on an idea for my design.

CritiqueI am really proud of this piece because as someone who likes illustration art the best, this was a bit of a challenge for me, but it was helpful in the critiques to hear the good and the bad. The stars were not perfect, and the lining could have been better. I also ended up getting stripes from blending of Prismacolors unintentionally. Otherwise, this piece was a pretty good success. If I were to do it again, I would start with the lighter colors in order to see if that stopped the violet blue from smudging.

ACT
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
The colors and symbols of the MPS, IB, Reagan and Olympics logos inspired me to use the colors and circle shapes. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The writers for the MPS website are biased towards the organization, but they are also trying to make students more educated and drawn towards the schools within the district. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I made the generalization that schools or places related to school value a lot of the same or similar ideals as those in the research that I did. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?. The main theme around my research was to show unity and the good parts of MPS not just the dull or weird parts. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I inferred that the schools, Programs, and Districts all have very similar ideals and mission statements for their work. |
